Simple Wrist & Hand Stretches for Pain and Stiffness

Wrist and hand stiffness can occur after prolonged computer use, repetitive work, sports, gripping activities or other everyday tasks.

Gentle wrist and hand stretches may help maintain flexibility, reduce muscle tightness and improve comfortable movement. If you already have wrist or hand pain, exercises should be performed gently and should not significantly increase your symptoms.

Here are 3 simple wrist and hand stretches you can try.

1. Prayer Stretch for Wrist Flexibility

The prayer stretch is a simple exercise for improving flexibility through the wrists and forearms.

How to do it:

  1. Place your palms together in front of your chest with your fingers pointing upward.

  2. Keep your palms together and slowly lower your hands until you feel a gentle stretch through your wrists and forearms.

  3. Hold for approximately 10–30 seconds.

  4. Relax and repeat 2–3 times.

You should feel a comfortable stretch rather than sharp or increasing pain.

2. Wrist Flexor & Extensor Stretch

This exercise stretches the muscles on both sides of your forearm that help control wrist and hand movement.

Wrist flexor stretch:

Extend one arm in front of you with your palm facing upward. Using your opposite hand, gently guide your fingers and wrist downward until you feel a stretch along your forearm.

Hold for 10–30 seconds, then repeat on the other side.

Wrist extensor stretch:

Extend your arm with your palm facing downward. Gently bend your wrist down with your opposite hand until you feel a comfortable stretch along the top of your forearm.

Repeat on both sides.

3. Hand Open & Close Exercise

This simple movement can help maintain mobility in your hands, fingers and wrists.

  1. Begin with your hand open and fingers comfortably spread.

  2. Slowly close your hand into a gentle fist. Avoid squeezing tightly.

  3. Hold briefly, then slowly open your hand and spread your fingers.

  4. Repeat approximately 10 times on each hand.

This exercise can be particularly useful as a movement break if you spend long periods typing or performing repetitive hand activities.

Tips for Healthy Wrists & Hands

In addition to stretching, changing positions and taking regular breaks from repetitive tasks can help manage wrist and hand discomfort.

Try to avoid staying in the same wrist position for long periods, especially when using a keyboard, mouse or mobile device. Gradually strengthening the muscles of the wrist, hand and forearm may also be beneficial depending on your condition.

Remember that stretching alone may not address the cause of persistent wrist or hand pain.

When Should I See a Physiotherapist for Wrist or Hand Pain?

Consider seeing a physiotherapist if your symptoms persist, repeatedly return or interfere with your work, exercise or everyday activities.

A physiotherapy assessment may be helpful if you experience:

  • Persistent wrist or hand pain

  • Pain when gripping or lifting

  • Reduced wrist movement

  • Ongoing weakness

  • Pins and needles or numbness

  • Pain following a sports or workplace injury

Your physiotherapist can assess your movement, strength and symptoms to determine an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation program.
